Contrary to what most people think organic indoor gardening is very much possible even if they are living in a city apartment. So as long as you have several windows, you can grow almost all vegetables in containers. Vegetables, herbs and flowers can be grown organically indoors by using pots, hanging baskets and numerous other containers. Just make sure to match the vegetable or any other plant you wish to grow with the proper sized container. Needless to say, the larger the plant will be at maturity the larger the container you will need.

Once you have figured out the type of vegetables you want to grow, make sure to buy only the strong healthy plants and seeds which is available at any good garden center for obvious reasons.

The next thing to do is to purchase organic potting soil; you can also buy pre packaged compost at the same time to increase the nutrient value of the potting soil.

In order to provide the plants the chance to adapt to their new environment, it is best to give them a day or two in front of a sunny window before transplanting them to the containers. When you are ready to transplant you can check the seeds package for planting instructions.

However, for those who cannot find room at all for container gardening, sprouts can be the best solution. You can buy organic alfalfa, mung beans, or any other sprouting seeds at your local health food store. Make a research about how you can plant these seeds in a jar. The sprouts will be ready in three to five days depending on the type of seed you are using. If they have reached the right size you can set the jar in a window and let them to green up.

Organic indoor gardening can be fun, plus it provides you with the opportunity to have the freshest vegetables and herbs that is healthier than what you can purchase at any regular supermarket.

Today’s garden advice is for the new gardener whose dream is having a garden that is always full of flowers, always in full bloom. All flower gardens have their peaks and valleys. While no flower garden can maintain its peak bloom, there is no reason why there can’t be something in bloom from early spring through late autumn. Knowledge of what blooms when and for how long will provide the new gardener with the ammunition required for the all-season bloom. Many garden centers, which can help with you with their own garden advice, are now selling annuals that are capable of flowering earlier than natural and will continue to bloom until the first frost. Perennials bloom for shorter periods of time, making them harder to work with.

When planning a full bloom garden one should approach the project by imagining your garden as a storage rental business.

As one tenant moves out another needs to take its place. And so it must be with your garden by creating a succession of blossoms by using a variety of plants.

My garden advice to the novice gardener is that a garden has its shining stars that never fail to amaze you with their gaudy blooms and colors. Building your garden around these stars is no different than building a sports team around its stars. Some spring stars are as follows: tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocus, and alliums. Daffodil blends will provide you with a color-coordinated mixture of varieties that will bloom at different times. They are also a deer resistant plant. Giant Dutch crocus will bloom weeks before other blooms set sail. To add variety to your early spring blooms plant Giant Glory of the Snow. They are 6-7 inches high with sky blue blossoms with white centers.

They are easy to grow and will multiply. Mulching and fertilizing  can be found on our site.

To bridge the gap between the spring and summer stars I recommend iris, (that will bloom through the summer), the alliums, which are very fragrant flowers and in rock gardens may bloom all through the summer. I personally recommend a Mountain Bells mixture that will bloom in late spring and again in the summer. They have a sweet fragrance and multiply freely year after year with hundreds of blooms. More garden advice would be to plant a lily mixture that will bloom through to mid summer.

Late summer bloomers would be begonias, which will bloom to the first frost. A gladiola mix will bloom through late summer. A favorite of mine that pop up in the late summer is the hardy cyclamen (Cyclamen hederifolium). The mature plants have beautiful rose-pink butterfly blooms that have many delicate 1″ blooms.

I know you will enjoy many hours visiting your star-studded all-season garden by following this garden advice.

Knowing the straw bale gardening basics will allow you to make your first straw bale garden thrive. Straw bale gardens are a great way to garden without having to worry about the condition of your soil. Straw bale gardening is a great way to create a raised bed and help your plants thrive. This article will discuss straw bale gardening basics in detail.

When first deciding to plant a straw bale garden you may be wondering what type of straw to use. Any straw will work for your straw bale gardening needs, and it is best to go with what is available in your area. The important part to remember is to not use hay. Hay is different from straw and it will sprout grass that is extremely hard to pull. Using hay will cause more work than necessary; so only use straw bales for your straw bale gardening needs.

Now that you have the straw bales you will be gardening with it is important to consider where and how your will create the structure of your garden. First it is important to remember to not let the string tying the bale together touch the ground. The string must not come in contact with the ground because this contact will cause it to rot. If the string rots your straw bale will fall apart, and so will your garden. Well kept straw bale gardens can be used for up to two years so this simple step is important. When placing your straw bales to form your garden there are a variety of patterns and designs you can create. Feel free to be creative with the design. As long as you can reach the top of the bale to add plants and weed than your straw bale garden placement is successful.

Now that you have the gardening layout set up you must wet the bales completely. When you wet the straw bales they will get hot. This is the composting process and it will take about a week for the bales to cool down. After the bales have cooled down feel free to weed them and add about 3 inches of soil to the top of the bales. If you are going to be gardening with transplants the soil is not necessary because you can plant right into the straw bales. If you are starting this garden from seed you will need to add the soil and sow seeds the same as you would in any other gardening situation.

Creating a straw bale garden is fun and easy. It adds an interesting touch to your garden and helps out in areas where the soil is not good for gardening.

raised garden bed

There has been a considerable increase in the number of people turning to their own gardens to grow their own vegetables to save money and to eat healthier food. Organic gardening is enjoying a level of popularity like never before and raised gardening seems to be the popular choice. A quick stroll around a few of the gardens in your neighborhood will reveal small board or stone sided rectangles in peoples’ backyards housing mini vegetable gardens.

First let us look at what a raised bed is. It is a small patch of land that is fenced in by either wood, stone, cinderblock or brick. In this article we cover some of the main aspects of raised bed gardening to help you make the transition from in-ground to raised bed gardening in a smooth way. The beds are built atop the native soil and may or may not incorporate the soil. The raised bed gardens can be built with a variety of materials.

Alternatively you can simply pile up the soil and ingredients to several inches in height and go ahead and plant anything from herbs to vegetables.

Raised gardening is not a new concept and has been in use for centuries to grow cash crops. There are advantages to be had in using this method to grow a healthy garden, though it may be a bit more expensive than just digging up the existing soil and planting your vegetables. The raised beds are uniformly spaced out and the gardener can tend them from both sides quite comfortably.

When planning a raised garden you have to consider the cost of rot resistant, untreated wood, if wood is your choice of wall frame for the garden. Line the bottom with a hardware fabric or chicken wire to prevent the voles and moles from getting into the garden.

If you think you don’t have any in your garden, guess again! Look into the watering system you have, if your garden is going to be large enough to warrant more than a hose and spray nozzle you will need to have the connect laid on. You will buy the best quality soil and compost so factor that in as well.

Some of the advantages of having a raised bed garden are:

You have the opportunity to grow your vegetables in the highest quality soil and compost available. Raised beds help you build up a rich and fertile base for your plants and you can make the adjustments with compost and fertilizer very easily.

Soil drainage is far better in raised beds than in-ground gardens and you will not have to stand in puddle water in your garden. Make sure to line the bottom with sand and rocks to facilitate good drainage.

Weeds and slugs will mostly stay out of your raised garden; it is not so easy for the weeds to get into a raised bed garden. If you leave enough room between the rows you can even use your mower to keep things tidy.

A well laid out garden means less maintenance time and no need to bend over for ages tending the beds.

Basic Gardening to me is simply growing things from seeds. Basically, it is simply growing plants. I got into gardening out of a desire to eat. Seeds cost very little, yet produce a lot. A packet containing 100 or more tomato seeds costs less than . Yet that little packet at a 20% germination rate can produce 20 tomato plants. If each plant yields only 1 lb. of tomatoes, you have gained in cost over growing to the grocery store.

And gardening is often that simple. Buy seeds, plant them and water them. Water will add to the cost of production, but you can reduce that cost by collecting and using rainwater as your watering source. The simplest way to collect rainwater is to buy an economical trash can or bucket, with a lid, and put it under the edge of the roof. Take the lid off when it’s raining, though. If the winds are strong during a rain, then you may want to put something heavy, like a rock, into the bottom of your bucket or can to keep it from blowing over during the rainstorm.

Though basic gardening really does involve little more than planting and watering, you may want to pay attention to some other little helps like mulching and composting. Mulch turns into compost as it breaks down. Compost is, in my opinion, simply good soil. There is a difference between dirt and compost, but I really do not know what it is. Compost is good for the garden and you can make your own. Set yourself up a spot in the back yard, and start throwing things into the pile. Turn it and mix it up once in a while to keep it hot enough and eventually everything breaks down into a dark, rich-looking soil-like compound. Mulch has a different purpose. It is very useful as a weed control, takes a minimum of 3 inches of compost. It is a weed control, not a weed preventative.

Gardening is simple and rewarding. I started out of a need and desire to save money on food, but you may simply enjoy the benefits of a beautiful flower, I started with mostly seeds, but you may want to grow from existing plants bought from your local garden center. One way to learn more about gardening is to listen to local gardening radio shows, visit your local garden center and ask the staff about what you need to get started. You may need a pot to grow things in if you do not have a yard, but you do not necessarily need a store bought pot to get started. Start with what you have, and old egg carton, a plastic milk jug, anything. Don’t forget the holes in the bottom for drainage, but start when you can and how you can and begin enjoying your garden experience.
